Chapter 47
As soon as Asil got home, she took out a necklace from her subspace and rummaged through the laundry basket for human clothes, practicing humanization without noticing the passage of time.
It was so much fun that she didn’t even hear the knock on the door.
She had stationed a baby rabbit as a lookout, but she didn’t know it had fallen asleep.
“Hwaaaaaaah!”
“Sorry, sorry!”
At the repeated scream, Edenber hurriedly slammed the door shut and left.
But only for a moment, he abruptly opened the door again, pointed, and stammered.
“You, you, you, who are you! This is the divine beast’s room!”
“Asil is Asil! Why do you just barge in like that!”
“I knocked before coming in! This is the divine beast’s room, so who the heck are you!? This isn’t a room for maids!”
“Asil isn’t a maid! Asil is-”
Oh, right.
She couldn’t let her husband find out that Asil is Asil.
“A maid.”
“You just said you weren’t a maid!”
“No, I’m a maid, for real.”
Asil is a maid starting today. In times like this, she had to act even more confident!
To show she wasn’t lying, Asil put on a bold expression and tilted her chin up.
However, Edenber had already sprouted seeds of suspicion.
His expression quickly turned cold, as if he’d been doused with ice water.
“I don’t recall hiring a kid like you.”
“But I’m really a maid.”
“Where did the lizard that was here go?”
His face grew wary as he scanned the surroundings.
It was only then that he noticed neither Asil nor the baby rabbit were anywhere to be seen.
In truth, startled by her screams, the baby rabbit was peeking out from behind the door, observing the situation.
Unaware of this, Edenber snapped.
“Did you send her to Count Erzébet or something?”
“I didn’t send her anywhere.”
“Did you think I’d fall for it if he sent a kid like you?”
Speaking coldly, he reached for his empty waistband.
It was an instinctive move to grab his sword.
Asil swallowed hard.
‘What do I do?’
It seemed her husband didn’t believe she was a maid at all.
Ugh, if only he’d knocked properly. Why did he barge into Asil’s room and get all mad!
But she couldn’t just admit she was Asil either. What should she do?
Then, a brilliant idea suddenly struck her. Thankfully, her dad had given her something for exactly this kind of situation!
“Wait a sec.”
Asil raised one hand to signal Edenber to wait.
Then she pressed the button on the necklace she got from Arcian.
Unfortunately, Edenber completely misunderstood her action as an attempt to escape.
“How dare you!”
Angry, he lunged at Asil.
At that moment, *crack*, a rift appeared in the air.
Just as a gust of wind blew into the supposedly calm room, Arcian, in his pajamas, dropped out of thin air.
“Oh my, my precious daughter. What’s the matter calling your dad in the middle of the night…?”
His affectionate voice, groggy from being summoned while sleeping with messy hair and sleepy eyes, faded instantly.
His gaze had landed on Edenber, who was on top of his daughter.
The moment Edenber, shocked by the sudden appearance, opened his mouth, he was hit by Arcian’s magic and flung against the wall.
*Bang!*
Edenber lost consciousness for a moment.
Arcian, his face devoid of any expression, walked toward Edenber.
He was set on finishing this guy off, reconnaissance in the human world be damned.
Startled, Asil hurriedly blocked his path.
She explained what had just happened to let him know Edenber hadn’t done anything bad.
“Asil was practicing, and he suddenly came in!”
“I see, don’t worry. Your dad will bury him personally.”
“You can’t bury him! I said I’m a maid, but he didn’t believe me!”
“Alright, I’ll burn him so there’s no trace left.”
“You can’t burn him either! That’s why I pressed the necklace, but he pushed me hard!”
“Then I’ll make him disappear from this world entirely.”
“He’s a good human! You can’t scold him!!!”
At that moment, a faint groan came from Edenber as he regained consciousness.
Arcian, still expressionless, approached him closely.
“Just come with me for a moment, my daughter.”
No way! Panicked, Asil swung her fist.
“Don’t scold him!”
“Urgh!”
Like a frog killed by a stray stone… or rather, Arcian, hit in the stomach by a blindly thrown punch, collapsed on the spot.
They say small peppers are spicy, and it hurt so much. For a moment, unable to speak, he groaned and stammered.
“D-daughter… Who did you take after to have such strength?”
“I take after Mom.”
“……”
Why did she call for Briana even at a time like this instead of him? Arcian nearly teared up.
Thanks to that, he regained his senses and, wincing from stomach pain, closely examined Asil.
“Are you sure Duke Monlepe didn’t do anything to you?”
“Yup. He’s a good human. Though he did barge into Asil’s room.”
“That’s what we call a bad human.”
No sooner had he said that than a thud came from behind.
What was that? Asil instinctively turned around.
She was greatly shaken to see Edenber collapsed, unconscious.
“Is Husband dead?!”
“He’s just asleep. Try putting your hand here. He’s alive, right?”
“…Yup, he’s breathing.”
Following Arcian, Asil placed her hand under Edenber’s nose and sighed in relief.
Phew, good thing he’s alive.
‘But why did he suddenly fall asleep?’
To fall asleep in a situation like this, he must be incredibly tired.
“Hey, Husband.”
She poked his cheek to tell him to wake up, but Edenber didn’t budge.
Asil squatted on the floor, watching Edenber sleep.
“Husband sleeps well.”
“Dad put him to sleep.”
“Why?”
“Because we can’t let him keep listening to our conversation.”
He’d only left him there intending to kill him, but if he had to let him live, it wouldn’t do to let him hear their secrets.
Though he’d already heard too much.
“I’ll need to use some magic.”
Speaking ominously, he reached for Edenber’s head. Asil slapped his hand away.
“Don’t scold him.”
“I know, I know. Earlier, Dad was just startled. I remember my promise with my daughter well.”
“Hmph.”
“I won’t scold him, just erase his memory a little. So he doesn’t know you can become human. That’s okay, right?”
“Yup.”
Nodding vigorously, Asil agreed.
Only then could Arcian place his hand on Edenber’s head.
A bright white light burst from his hand.
“It’s a simple spell, so it’ll be over quickly.”
Simple spell, my foot. Memory manipulation was among the highest-tier mental magic.
Arcian, wanting to look cool in front of his daughter, spoke confidently as if it were no big deal.
However.
Even after a long time, the light from his hand showed no sign of stopping.
Asil, who had been squatting and watching, yawned widely and muttered.
“It’s taking forever.”
“…This shouldn’t be happening.”
Genuinely flustered, Arcian muttered to himself.
“Why is his magic resistance so high? Is the Minlepe family known for magical prowess? No, they’re famous for swordsmanship.”
“Yaaaawn.”
“If you’re sleepy, why don’t you sleep? With this level of resistance, I’d believe he’s a beastkin. Have you ever heard anything like that about Duke Monlepe?”
“Nope.”
“Then why is his resistance so high?”
He rarely used mental magic, but he’d never struggled this much except when dealing with fellow beastkin.
Arcian furrowed his fine brow.
“I’ll have to try another method. At this rate, some memories might remain, even if only faintly.”
“You’re bad at magic, mister.”
“No, this human is the weird one. You believe your dad, right?”
“Can’t Mom erase Husband’s memories too?”
“Of course. Dad’s better at magic than Mom.”
“Mom said she’s the best in the world.”
“That’s a lie. Dad’s better.”
“But you can’t erase Husband’s memories. So Mom’s better.”
“Even if Briana came, she wouldn’t be able to…”
No matter how Briana was the king of beastkin, he was superior in magic.
Feeling dejected, Arcian slumped his shoulders. He already disliked Edenber and now he disliked him even more.
Even so, he didn’t stop manipulating Edenber’s memories.
“With this resistance, this is the best I can do. I’ve made the remaining memories feel like a dream.”
Pushing aside his gloom, Arcian finished the spell.
Not long after, Edenber was moved to his own room.
As if nothing had happened.
