“Any other discomfort?”

I asked the patient. He had come in that morning supported by a colleague. He complained of high fever, severe coughing, and aches all over his body.

‘Looks like the flu…’

I noted down every symptom he described on his chart. His temperature was quite elevated, so I was about to tell Eddie we should keep him under observation in the clinic when another patient with the exact same symptoms arrived.

“…There are unusually many patients today, Doctor.”

Eddie looked puzzled. I was just as startled. This was the first time so many people had crowded in since early morning. What’s more, two of them had arrived barely able to walk on their own, leaning heavily on others for support in such a short span of time.

“I know. Maybe because the weather’s turning cold? Eddie, could you take the first patient?”
