"Are you sure you'll be all right?"

The space I had pointed to was a truly tiny gap between the cargo.

"That spot is left empty so a porter can climb up there when it's time to unload the crates."

The engineer shook his head as he spoke.

"You said two of you need to ride. There's no way two people can fit in there."

"It's fine! We just need to get there somehow!"

This was no time to be picky.

"Even so, it'll be awfully cramped... This is a freight train, not a passenger train, so the ride is rough, and it isn't all that fast, either."

Sure enough, the space looked just right for one person. Still, since it was left open for unloading, it wasn't quite a one-person space; it looked to be about one and a half people's worth, enough to turn your arms…
