I’m Retiring
“What a god-awful weather.”
On a battlefield drenched in crimson.
Standing before the corpse of a gigantic monster, Oh Hyeonseong muttered as he stood beneath the steady downpour of red rain.
Then, with great difficulty, he turned his head and looked around.
It was nothing but ruins.
A place of death, littered with the bodies of countless civilians who had been unable to evacuate in time.
Every single comrade who had been deployed with him on the operation was dead.
The only survivor in this hellish place was Oh Hyeonseong.
“Cough! Damn…………”
And he himself was in no better shape.
Blood was pouring from wounds all over his body, and even the slightest movement brought excruciating pain.
One of his eyes had been impossible to open for a while now.
At least half of his ribs were crushed, and the organs inside had long since been reduced to a bloody mess.
Oh Hyeonseong was accustomed to suffering injuries here and there, but this time, the weight of the damage he felt was on an entirely different level.
More than anything, it looks like one of my legs is completely done for… At this point, there’s no saving it.
Oh Hyeonseong let out a hollow laugh.
Several teams of operatives had been wiped out, and his own body had been reduced to a gruesome state.
But that wasn’t the only thing that cut deeply into his heart.
I’m sorry. For having such a useless master.
Traces of elemental energy lay scattered around him.
Oh Hyeonseong possessed a rare special constitution, something that manifested in only a small number of Awakened.
And among such special constitutions, he was the sole person in the entire world to possess the ability known as Spirit Communion.
But on this battlefield, he had lost all of his spirits.
Since the moment he first awakened, he had been forced to part with the partners who had remained by his side all this time.
Only a few low-ranking spirits with no combat abilities had survived.
Whimper, whimper.
Tiny, green-colored spirits appeared one after another.
The spirits of life slowly emerged and hovered around Oh Hyeonseong, gazing at him as though worried about his condition.
Bzzzt!
“…Silence from the queen entity has been confirmed. The mission is a success.”
“Senior! Senior! Can you hear me? Please, just hold on a little longer! Please……………!”
Voices flowed from the radio that had been dead until moments ago.
In the distance, he could hear the sound of helicopter rotors.
“Looks like I’m not destined to die here after all.”
They had succeeded in a mission that had been nearly impossible.
They had killed the queen entity that everyone believed could never be defeated and had achieved their strategic objective.
They had even saved the lives of millions of people.
His achievements would become a legend spoken of by every hunter in the industry.
But what meaning does any of that have?
It had already been ten years since he began living as a black-ops operative for his country.
Now, all he could feel on these blood-soaked battlefields was emptiness.
In other words, his motivation as a hunter had run out.
“I think… it’s time for me to retire.”
Oh Hyeonseong pulled out the resignation letter he had kept tucked inside his clothing.
Then he brought his pen toward the final signature line, which he had left blank for the past year.
Scratch, scratch.
Suddenly, he remembered something an old friend from his hometown had once told him.
He had said that Hyeonseong should stop living the suffocating life of the city and come down to the countryside whenever he wanted. He even had a piece of land picked out for him in a quiet rural area.
Normally, it was something Hyeonseong would have simply ignored.
But strangely, his friend’s words had continued to linger in his mind.
Back then, he hadn’t understood why.
But now, he thought he might know.
Perhaps it was because, deep down, his heart had already begun to waver.
“Phew……………”
Clenching the bloodstained resignation letter tightly, Oh Hyeonseong abruptly tossed the pen aside.
Then he closed his eyes and repeated the words to himself.
“Yeah. I think I’ll become a farmer.”
