"Yes. That's why I remember it."

It contradicted her claim that she couldn't even remember the name of the place she used to live.

Nick slurped the coffee Louis had handed him and went on.

"In Linkerton, she apparently went around complaining to everyone that she'd ended up in that state because she was kidnapped, but I didn't believe it even then."

"Why not?"

"Because in the middle of some conversation with me, she said, 'I was a noble too, until I lived in Alessa!'"

He said it hadn't sounded like bluster.

"I can't figure out why someone who had lived in Alessa without envying anyone would end up working as a tavern waitress in Linkerton. She clammed up about the reason, so there must be something there, don't you think?"
