Reassured that the fever would not last, the butler saw the physician out.

“My lady. Please take your medicine and rest early. I'll bring you some water.”

“…No. I'll take the medicine later.”

Puzzled by Ines's order, Marie nonetheless set down the water pitcher she had picked up.

Turning to look at Ines, Marie was startled and rushed over to her.

“My lady. Are you unwell? Your face looks rather pale.”

Ines's face had gone white, like someone badly frightened by something.

When Marie, alarmed, said she would call the physician back, Ines caught her wrist and shook her head.

“No, Marie.”

“My lady. But you look so unwell right now.”

“I'm fine. It's probably just the fever. I only need to rest a little.”

She could not ignore her lady's desperate refusal to have the physician called.
